Reflecting on Your Teaching

The five perspectives of Friendly and Fair Teaching each contribute to a positive learning environment. Teachers integrate one or more perspectives into their teaching style.

Reflecting on your teaching is as much about improving your teaching as it is about preventing- and effectively resolving disruptions. With the five perspectives of FFT you achieve educational goals in a peaceful manner: Socialization – The more social everyone is, the better everyone can qualify (Qualification). The more influence a student has in the learning process the more individual qualities emerge (Subjectivation). See Gert Biesta

1. Establishing a Friendly Tone

I teach in a friendly manner and I find that most students follow my lead. By teaching in a friendly manner, I prevent disruptions. If a student does disrupt the lesson, I reinforce positive behaviour. The social aspect comes first in my lessons. When everyone is friendly, you feel at home.

2. Establishing Fairness

I create a positive learning environment by adhering to the FFT framework (Friendly and Fair). Teaching objectives help me shape my lessons. For both ‘Teacher-Centred Education‘ and ‘Student-Centred Education‘ I make clear what I expect from my students.

3. Planning Lessons

When teaching the entire class, I get my students excited about a topic. When my students are working independently, they have the opportunity to chart their own course within a structure I provide. By doing so, I increase their intrinsic motivation and autonomy. I ask my students to rate my lessons. Their suggestions help me improve the teaching material.

4. Observing Learning

If we pay attention to each other’s body language and spoken language, we connect more easily and sense each other’s mood.

5. Behaviour Management Strategies

I clearly state my boundaries. With a student who disrupts the lesson I reinforce positive behaviour. I do this in a friendly and fair manner. Therefore, in my classes there are few disruptions.

6. Implementing Friendly and Fair Teaching

I use a the FFT questionnaire and the overview to reflect on my teaching. My goal is becoming a Friendly and Fair Teacher and implementing FFT in my lessons and if possible together with my colleages.
